"Tonga - The real Polynesia"
The small ancient Kingdom of Tonga is still largely as it was in the late 1700s when Captain James Cook named it the 'Friendly Islands', providing a warm welcome to its visitors who come from all corners of the world. The hospitality provided by the local culture filters down through all aspects of the experience.
Vava’u is the Northern group of the Tongan Islands and with its safe anchorages and secluded coves it offers one of the world's finest cruising areas. The Vava'u Archipelago is blessed with a near-perfect climate for year-round sailing. It is estimated to have had over 2,000 years of settlement. This group of islands is a place of brilliant colours, blue lagoons, fine white coral sand beaches and lush green coconut plantations. The sailing conditions of crystal clear waters combined with Tonga's spectacular scenery all add to an experience that will remain with you for years to come!
Experienced sailors liken the Vava'u group to "a cross between the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands", with its dramatic deep water drop-offs and brilliant shallow lagoons, the sailing and cruising is rated amongst the best in the world.
The Vava'u group has a population of approximately 15,000. About one third live in or around Neiafu Township and the harbor. The Sunsail base is positioned on the northeastern edge of the harbor conveniently located within a 5 minute walk from the township center, shops, banks, cafes and bars. The harbor itself is a deep wholly sheltered, fiord-like anchorage. From this central location there are in excess of forty recognised anchorages within a 2 ½ hour sail from the base.
The diving and snorkelling in Vava’u is amazing - crystal clear waters with its brilliantly coloured coral and abundance of reef fish, it is no exaggeration to say that it’s like swimming in an aquarium!
For those who enjoy dining out, there are a number of quaint island beach bars and restaurants. A number are located on outer islands adjacent to magical anchorages, offering a selection of local and international cuisine, not to mention cocktails and beverages whilst you watch the Tongan sunset. A traditional Tongan feast is an event not to be missed, there are several each week at villages located on the outer Islands, the Sunsail base can advise you and make reservations on your behalf.
Vava’u is truly nature’s aquatic adventure land offering a good range of Watersport including:
- Kite surfing
- Adventure Kayaking
- Sport fishing
- Whale swim and watching
Wherever you sail in these delightful islands, you can be sure to see something new and exciting at every turn… a truly breathtaking adventure.
